Horse Racing: Stop at a Winner

Bet Overview

How many races on a card will elapse before a favourite wins? The make-up is 10 times the number of that race. In the event of there being no winning favourite, the make-up will be ten times one more than the number of races on the card, i.e. 80 points on a seven race card with no winning favourite. Where there are joint or co-favourites, the horse with the lowest racecard number is considered to be the favourite. A favourite which dead heats for first place is treated as an outright winner.

Example

At a Goodwood flat meeting, our opening Stop at a Winner might be 28 - 31. There were some strong favourites in the first two races hence the low price. If you disagreed with this however, you would go high (buy) at 31, expecting the favourites to lose Lets say it wasnt until the fourth race that a favourite won so the make up was 40. Had you bought at 31 you would have won 9 times your stake. 9 x £5 = £45 Had you sold at 28 you would have lost 12 times your stake. 12 x £5 = -£60
